Hathras Accused Use “Indian Culture” As Defense, Claim Innocence

The brutal gang-rape and murder of a dalit woman in UP’s Hathras sent shockwaves throughout the country. The aftermath of the rape saw an institutionally facilitated cover up, where the family of the victim was stripped off any dignity, locked up while the victim’s body was secretly cremated, and then blamed for honour-killing their daughter (which in an upper-caste practice).

Five months since the shameful incident, and the victim’s family still awaits justice and the legal process is delayed due to procedural issues, despite instructions from UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to fast-track the case.
